This study analyzes the types of flouting maxim and the conversational implicatures generated by Jordan Belfort's utterances in the movie The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). Using Grice's (1975) Cooperative Principle as the theoretical framework, this study employed a qualitative approach. The data were collected from Jordan Belfort's utterances in the movie transcript, cross-checked using the film streamed on the Netflix platform. The results show that Jordan Belfort flouted three out of four conversational maxims: Quality, Relation, and Manner. No instance of flouting the maxim of Quantity was found because Jordan's utterances did not show him intentionally give more or less information than the situation required. The flouting of the maxim of Quality occurred when Jordan made statements he did not genuinely believe in order to deceive or manipulate those around him. The flouting of the maxim of Relation occurred when Jordan gave irrelevant responses to redirect conversations away from topics that put him at a disadvantage. The flouting of the maxim of Manner occurred when Jordan used vague or obscure language to conceal information. All implicatures identified are particularized conversational implicatures, as their interpretation depends on specific contextual knowledge. This study concludes that flouting maxim functions as a deliberate communicative strategy that allows Jordan Belfort to manipulate and conceal information throughout the film. Manipulation is done through flouting the maxim of Quality, while concealment is done through flouting the maxims of Relation and Manner. The writer suggests that future studies could expand the scope of the research to multiple characters in the same movie and explore other types of maxim non-observance, such as violation or opting out, alongside flouting for a broader understanding of conversational behavior.
