This study shows the use of illocutionary acts in the Instagram captions posted by Taylor Swift to promote her Eras Tour. As one of the most famous singers in the world, Swift’s Instagram captions are a perfect case study for examining what types of illocutionary acts are used in the caption. The writer is interested in understanding the intention behind Swift’s words in the Instagram captions. This study is guided by two research questions: What types of illocutionary acts are used in Taylor Swift's Instagram captions for the Eras Tour? and What patterns of illocutionary acts are used in Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Instagram captions? The writer analysed the data using Yule’s (1996) classification of illocutionary acts. A total of 24 Instagram captions related to the Eras Tour were selected and analysed using qualitative analysis. The findings reveal that representative, commissive, and expressive acts are the most used types. These illocutionary acts help Swift express gratitude, state facts, and make promises. In addition, five main patterns of illocutionary acts were found in Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Instagram captions. In conclusion, Swift uses captions not only to inform and announce her tour but also to express her feelings and promise to meet her fans.
